I have been a loyal and happy GrandCentral user for quite a while now. I think it is a great service that has served me well. So I was not worried when I recently decided to break down and buy an iPhone. I was/am a Tmobile customer with the Dash, but figured it was no big deal, I would just add my new iPhone number on my GrandCetnral account. This is the true beauty of the One Phone Number For Life.
Sounds great, right ? Well i have recently stumbled on to a small bug in the workflow for the iPhone. The other day I received an email on my iPhone saying I had a new GrandCentral voice message. I navigated mobileSafari over to the mobile GrandCentral page and logged in without an issue. The problem arises when trying to play the message. In a nutshell, it doesn't. I am not sure what is happening but it basically comes up in a window and with a play arrow that is X out .... I had no issues with this on my Dash, it downloaded and played in the local Windows Media Player, but no such luck on the iPhone. Now if the iPhone only had Flash .... I could play my messages through the regular GrandCentral page, but no such luck there either.
It is very frustrating to be out and so connected, only to not be able to hear that voice message that you know is sitting there waiting for you.
Has anyone else had this experience ? Love to hear if you got around it.
Word on the street is that Flash is coming in an update at some point. I wouldn't hold my breath about .wma though.
I don't have Grand Central, but from what I've heard about it, it sounds pretty rad.
Here's to hoping you find a fix!
As long as the message is marked NEW, you can call your GC number from your phone to access your voicemail box. Their player on the website is Flash so yea, who knows when the iPhone update with Flash support will come.
There is now an iPhone GrandCentral visual voicemail WebApp. It's a work in progress, but much better than nothing. You can read more here or use it on your iPhone/iPod touch at
I just put out an iPhone GrandCentral visual voicemail webapp. You can read more about it at or you can use it on your iPhone now at (sorry, the comment system removes links)
The comment system is quite picky... rectu[dot]ms/iphone for the app or my blog blog[dot]qays[dot]net for more info
